LED Bulb Li-Fi Technology High-Speed Internet 100xFaster than Wi-Fi

Can LED Bulb Give Superfast Internet Lightning Speed Of 10 Gbps 5G Speed?

high-speed internet High-speed internet has always been a dream in India, though we are using 4G network still, there are so many areas where we could use only 3G or 2G network due to the network issues. Some remote areas are still untouched from the internet, and some of them do not even have the electricity. But soon it will change.

According to the news circulated by the media, the Indian Govt. has successfully tested a technology which will provide high-speed internet through LED Bulb. Can you believe it?  Yes, this is going to be a reality. You can get high-speed internet without a Wi-Fi and broadband internet connection. The government of India is currently working with IIT Madras, including Philips, a company that produces LED bulbs.

Li-Fi – A New Technology For High-Speed Internet –

The Indian government has successfully tested a new technology, VLC a visible light communications technology which use of visible light spectrum instead of radio frequencies (RFs) to enable wireless data communication. Under the recent pilot project, the Information and Technology Ministry has successfully conducted this test. It allows high-speed internet data transfers to the area of 1 km from the speed of 10 GB per second through the LED bulb and light spectrum.  This new technology has been named the Li-Fi (Light Fidelity).

Li-fi uses the visible light spectrum rather than radio waves that are used in Wi-Fi. As compared to Wi-Fi, Li-Fi is faster, safer and much more efficient. In Li-Fi, data is sent by adding a microchip to any LED bulbs. This makes them blink on and off at a phenomenal speed, millions of times per second. Although these blinks can’t be detected by the naked eyes, it can be detected by a light-sensitive receiver which turns these light pulses into data like HD videos and can give lightning speed of 10Gbps high-speed internet.

Who Invented Li-Fi Technology – Future of Connectivity –

Harald Haas, a professor of mobile communications at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, introduced the concept of Li-Fi “wireless data from every light” in 2011 through TEDGlobal Talk in Edinburgh. He is also the co-founder of pureLiFi Ltd, a light communications technology company. Since then, different companies and organizations like Google and NASA are also testing and working on this technology.

How Li-Fi Can Help Indian Society And Change The Future –

Li-Fi can actually turns an existing infrastructure into a more useful one. The infrastructure for light-based connectivity relies on LED bulbs, while radio-based wireless connectivity relies on base stations. And according to Haas, these LED bulbs are not just the light emitting units; they are now a wireless transceiver or a Li-Fi access point. Today LED bulbs are widely used so they could be the medium to provide high-speed internet with more energy efficiency in future. But there is a one limitation, because Li-Fi is based on a light; it requires a clear line of sight and it can’t penetrate hard objects such as a wall.

The government says that in such areas of the country where electricity is, but not fibre optics. It can be possible to access the high-speed internet through it. An independent Scientific Society, Education and Research Network (ERNET) now want to use this technology in the cities with the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru. Neena Pahuja, Director-General of ERNET said that “One of the biggest use-cases of Li-Fi could be in the upcoming smart cities in the country, whose underlying theme will be the internet of things for modern city management and will be connected by LED bulbs”. Sumit Joshi, Managing Director, Philips Lighting India said that they are committed to bringing new technologies and will continue to work on new technologies in this field.

FAQ

Question 1. What is a Li-Fi technology?

Answer: Li-Fi is a technology for wireless communication between devices using light to transmit data.

Question 2. What is the difference between LiFi and WiFi?

Answer: LiFi transmits data using light with the help of LED bulbs while WiFi transmits data using radio waves with the help of WiFi router.

Question 3. What is the maximum speed of WiFi?

Answer: Theoretically WiFi is capable of achieving the max. speed up to 900 MBps of transfer rate.

Question 4. What is the speed of LiFi ?

Answer: This visible light spectrum is 10,000 times larger than the entire radio frequency spectrum. Researchers have reached data rates of over 224 Gbits per second in the lab.

Question 5. When will LiFi be available in India?

Answer: LiFi technology is still in the testing phase. IT Ministry is currently working on this technology with IIT Madras including Philips. Right now there is no notification has been made for the availability of LiFi Technology.

Question 6. What are the benefits of LiFi over WiFi?

Answer: There are following benefits of LiFi over WiFi:

  1. LED bulb will give us light as well as internet access.
  2. Lifi is able to work under the water too.
  3. Lifi is not harmful unlike RF on which Wifi works.
  4. As the light won’t pass through walls, eavesdropping is nearly impossible.
  5. As LED is already consume very less power, so the power consumption for data transmission will be very low.

Question 7. What are the drawbacks or disadvantages of LiFi technology?

Answer: Lifi technology has some of the limitations too which are as follows:

  1. Internet cannot be used without a light source, which limits its usage based on locations and situations.
  2. Lifi signal range is limited by physical barriers as the light can’t penetrate walls.
  3. The interception of signals outdoors will be the biggest problem, because sunlight will interfere the signals.
  4. LiFi technology would require a completely new infrastructure to be built.
